What is a Pellet Grill

A pellet grill is an outdoor cooker that burns compressed hardwood pellets and uses electricity to automate heat, airflow, and fuel delivery. At its core, a pellet grill blends the functions of a smoker, an oven, and a traditional grill, giving cooks the ability to smoke, roast, bake, braise, barbecue, and sear with consistent, wood‑fired flavour.

Pellet grills work by storing pellets in a hopper, which feeds them into a fire pot using a motor‑driven auger. The pellets are ignited by a heated metal rod—often called a HotRod or igniter rod—which starts combustion without the need for lighter fluid or matches. A combustion fan supplies oxygen to the burning pellets and circulates heat and smoke throughout the cooking chamber. This airflow system ensures even cooking and prevents flare‑ups, while a drip tray shields food from direct flame.

The defining feature of pellet grills is their precise temperature control. A digital controller regulates the auger speed and fan operation, maintaining a steady temperature much like a household oven. This “set‑it and forget‑it” capability allows long, slow cooks—such as brisket, ribs, or pork shoulder—to run for hours with minimal supervision. Because the grill automatically adjusts pellet feed rates, it can hold temperatures far more consistently than charcoal or gas grills, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced pitmasters.

Pellet grills are powered by electricity, which enables their automation but also means they require a power source. Once plugged in, the user simply loads pellets, selects a temperature, and lets the grill manage the rest. The fan continues running during shutdown to safely burn off remaining pellets, preventing flame travel back into the auger.

Beyond convenience, pellet grills are prized for flavour. Because they burn real hardwood pellets, they infuse food with a clean, consistent wood‑smoke profile. Their versatility—grilling steaks, smoking brisket, baking desserts, or roasting vegetables—makes them a favourite among backyard cooks seeking both ease and performance. In short, a pellet grill delivers authentic wood‑fired cooking with modern precision and reliability.
